LABS AND CENTERS

Explore our VIS Initiatives

The Center for Design

The Center for Design is Northeastern’s platform for interdisciplinary design research; it’s a space for collaborative research activities and a hub for connecting the actors of the design eco-system. It aims at sharing knowledge and practices, shaping common tools and methods, strengthening a unified disciplinary ground.

Co-Lab for Data Impact

The Co-Laboratory for Data Impact focuses on narrative data strategies and is committed to advancing civic-oriented and impactful visual storytelling for issues of public urgency in the areas of diversity, transparency, and sustainability. The lab serves as a university hub for faculty, staff, and students looking to communicate visually with data in the public sphere and for external partners of various kinds seeking expertise in this domain.

Data Visualization at Khoury

Data visualizations are designed to leverage the impressive human visual bandwidth so that users can spot clusters, gaps, trends, outliers in the data within a fraction of a second. Visualizations, combined with interaction and animation techniques, can help experts interpret and explore complex data as well as gain confidence in their algorithmic results.

GIS and Data Visualization at Snell Library

Here at the Northeastern University Library, we provide support for people learning topics related to data visualization (such as using data viz tools, improving data visualization design, and poster/presentation design). We offer:

Human-Computer Interaction

Computer systems support human beings in day-to-day tasks—they help us work, communicate, find entertainment, and promote health and wellness. At Khoury College of Computer Sciences, our researchers explore how to facilitate more effective and ethical human-computer interaction (HCI). We spearhead the development and testing of innovative user interfaces, sensing systems, and data visualization tools and analytics. We use innovative methods to understand how and why people interact with computing systems and devices, uncover fundamental issues impacting everyday computer system use, and discover how human behavior can influence system designs of the future.

Human-Data Interaction at the Roux Institute

Data transformation in organizations depends on more than just having the right data; decision makers need to understand the data and be empowered to take meaningful action. In human data interaction, we design, build, and deploy interactive visualization tools and AI to empower people with data and solve real-world problems.

NULab for Texts, Maps, and Networks

The NULab for Texts, Maps, and Networks is Northeastern University’s center for digital humanities and computational social science.

The NULab supports research projects and scholarly exchanges through grants and other programs; convenes a group of core faculty who teach a wide range of courses and publish broadly in the digital realm; trains graduate students in DH and CSS skills through our Graduate Certificate in Digital Humanities and NULab Fellows programs; sponsors talks and symposia; offers support to visiting scholars in partnership with Northeastern’s Digital Scholarship Group; helps to bring digital and computational methods into a broad range of classes through our Digital Integration Teaching Initiative; and provides fora for discussions of technology, teaching, and research at Northeastern.

NULawLab

The NuLawLab is the interdisciplinary innovation laboratory at Northeastern University School of Law. We are leaders in the emerging global Legal Design movement.

Our programs, projects, seminars, and research allow us to build cross-disciplinary teams and community-based partnerships focused on transforming legal education, the legal profession, and the delivery of legal services. We do this work at the leading public interest law school in order to provide our students with the knowledge and skills to be the legal inventors of the future.

NuLawLab works to create dialogue that will allow us to find mechanisms to advance social equity and dismantle systemic racial oppression by committing to advancing intersectional transformation.
